In mid-April 2025, Nyando Social Justice Center, with the support of Echo Network Africa, convened a powerful engagement for women champions from across Kisumu County. This gathering brought together women leaders from different sub-counties to share their experiences, challenges, and strategies in addressing the alarming rise of femicide and gender-based violence (GBV) in their communities.
A Safe Space for Difficult Conversations
The forum provided a safe and supportive environment for women to openly discuss cases of femicide-tragic incidents where women have lost their lives due to gender-based violence. Participants bravely recounted stories from their localities, highlighting not only the severity of the problem but also the resilience and determination of women who continue to seek justice for victims.
Overcoming Challenges in GBV Case Follow-Up
Despite facing numerous obstacles-including limited resources, stigma, and slow legal processes-these women champions have remained steadfast in their commitment to following up on GBV and femicide cases. They shared how they support survivors, document cases, and engage with authorities to demand accountability and protection for women and girls.
Partnership for Impact
This engagement was made possible through the support of Echo Network Africa, an organization dedicated to empowering women and amplifying their voices in leadership, governance, and social justice. By partnering with such institutions, Nyando Social Justice Center continues to strengthen its work in championing gender equality and ending violence against women in Kisumu County.
The stories and strategies shared during this engagement will inform ongoing advocacy and community action. Nyando Social Justice Center remains committed to supporting women champions, raising awareness, and pushing for systemic change to ensure that all women and girls can live free from violence.
Together, we can break the silence around femicide and build safer, more just communities for all. If you would like to get involved or support our work, please reach out-we welcome your solidarity in this vital cause.
