NSJC Leads Workplace TB Champions Forum in Migori County

Caren Kiarie recently represented Nyando Social Justice Center at a vital three-day forum for TB Champions from high TB burden workplaces, held at Discretion Hotel in Migori County from 25th to 27th March 2026. As team leader for the Kisumu County delegation, Caren brought valuable insights from Nyando’s community health work to strengthen workplace TB prevention and awareness across the region.

Championing TB Prevention in High-Burden Workplaces

The forum gathered 9 TB Champions, one from each sub-county, to share experiences, learn best practices, and develop strategies to combat TB in workplaces where transmission risks remain high. Participants explored practical approaches to workplace sensitization, early detection, stigma reduction, and linking workers to treatment services.

Caren Kiarie’s leadership and participation were highly valued by fellow champions and facilitators. Her contributions emphasized the importance of community-led responses and the lessons learned from Nyando Social Justice Center’s work with PLHIV, adolescents, and other vulnerable groups in Kisumu County.

Sharing Nyando’s Experience, Learning Regional Best Practices

Key highlights from the forum included:

  • Workplace sensitization strategies tailored to different sectors
  • Early detection and referral systems that protect workers and their colleagues
  • Reducing TB stigma through peer education and leadership
  • Integration with other health programs, including HIV care and general wellness

Caren shared Nyando Social Justice Center’s experiences in building trust with community health champions, documenting cases, and ensuring continuity of care. In turn, the forum provided opportunities to learn from other counties’ successful models that can be adapted for Nyando workplaces.

Strengthening the Fight Against TB in Nyando Communities

The Migori forum equipped us with actionable tools and networks to enhance TB prevention efforts among Nyando’s high-burden workplaces, including factories, markets, and agricultural hubs. As team leader, she returned committed to:

  • Training and supporting workplace TB champions in Nyando
  • Creating safe spaces for workers to seek TB testing and treatment
  • Documenting and reporting workplace TB cases for better response
  • Collaborating with county health teams and private sector partners

Nyando Social Justice Center remains dedicated to ending TB as a public health threat. By strengthening workplace responses, we protect workers, their families, and entire communities from this preventable disease.

Together, through leadership, collaboration, and community action, we move closer to a TB-free Nyando.
