Nyando Social Justice Center was proud to attend and actively participate as a key stakeholder in the launch of the nationwide Measles Rubella and Typhoid vaccination campaign in Nyando, Kisumu County. This important public health initiative, running from July 5th to 14th, 2025, aims to protect millions of children across Kenya from these dangerous but preventable diseases.
Why This Campaign Matters
Measles and rubella are highly contagious viral infections that can cause severe complications, especially in young children. Between January 2024 and February 2025, Kenya reported nearly 3,000 measles cases and 18 deaths, with outbreaks confirmed in 18 counties. Low uptake of the second dose of the Measles-Rubella vaccine at 18 months has left many children vulnerable.
Typhoid fever, caused by the bacteria Salmonella Typhi, remains a significant threat, especially in informal settlements and rural areas with limited access to clean water and sanitation. Kenya records over 100,000 typhoid cases annually, with rising antimicrobial-resistant strains making treatment more difficult. The Typhoid Conjugate Vaccine (TCV) offers protection for at least five years with a single dose and is now part of the national immunization schedule for children from nine months of age.
A Call to Action
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale emphasized the safety, effectiveness, and free availability of these vaccines at all public health facilities and outreach centers. He urged parents, caregivers, teachers, and community leaders to support the campaign and ensure that every eligible child is vaccinated.
Nyando Social Justice Center joins this call and encourages all community members to take full advantage of this opportunity to protect their children’s health. Vaccination is a vital tool to prevent illness, save lives, and build healthier communities.
How to Participate
The campaign targets children aged 9 months to 14 years for the Typhoid vaccine and children aged 9 to 59 months for the Measles-Rubella vaccine. For more information or assistance, please visit your nearest public health facility or contact Nyando Social Justice Center.
Together, we can close the gap and ensure no child is left behind in the fight against vaccine-preventable diseases.
Protect our children. Protect our future. Get vaccinated.
