On November 20th, 2025, stakeholders implementing the Community Pharmacy Model (CPM) convened at Kyaka Hotel in Machakos County to review achievements, identify gaps, and strategize the scale-up to phase two of the project. This meeting marked exactly one year since Nyando Social Justice Center began championing this innovative model among the People Living with HIV (PLHIV) community.
The CPM allows individuals on Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) to conveniently pick up their drugs from a community pharmacy of their choice, enhancing access and privacy. The model started with five pilot counties; Kisumu, Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru, and Kiambu - and has since expanded with seven additional counties preparing for implementation.
Prior to the Machakos meeting, on November 17th, the Kisumu County CPM Champions held a review meeting to share progress and experiences. Following this, on November 18th and 19th, meetings with pharmacists already implementing the model took place at Acacia Hotel to assess operational challenges and successes.

Kisumu performed exceptionally well in the pilot phase, which is why Caren Wambui from Nyando Social Justice Center was selected as the national champion to lead the expansion efforts. The Machakos session focused on developing a robust strategy to roll out the CPM across all 47 counties in Kenya.
The Community Pharmacy Model represents a significant advancement in differentiated service delivery, bringing ART services closer to recipients of care, and contributing to improved treatment adherence and retention in care.
Nyando Social Justice Center remains dedicated to supporting this transformative model, ensuring that PLHIV throughout Kenya can benefit from accessible, high-quality HIV care services.
Together, we renew our commitment to innovative, patient-centered care for stronger, healthier communities.
