Climate Stakeholders Meeting on Biochar Innovation

On April 30, 2025, Nyando Social Justice Center participated in a pivotal climate change stakeholders and champions meeting at Acacia Hotel, Kisumu. The event, hosted by TERA-a leading Kenyan climate tech company-brought together key voices from across the region to discuss the future of sustainable agriculture and climate action, with a special focus on biochar technology.

Spotlight on Biochar: Sustainable Solutions for Kisumu

The meeting centered on TERA’s recent launch of a state-of-the-art biochar facility in Kisumu. This facility converts agricultural waste, particularly bagasse (the fibrous residue from sugarcane processing), into biochar-a natural soil enhancer that improves water retention, boosts crop yields, and reduces the need for chemical fertilizers. TERA’s advanced pyrolysis technology not only addresses local agricultural challenges but also plays a crucial role in climate change mitigation by sequestering carbon and reducing emissions.

Empowering Communities and Promoting Food Security

TERA’s project is designed to create jobs, especially for women in Kisumu, and to support food security in drought-prone regions. By transforming agricultural waste into valuable resources, the initiative strengthens local resilience and empowers rural women to take leadership roles in sustainable agriculture.

A Step Forward for Climate Action in Kisumu

The Nyando Social Justice Center is proud to be part of this collaborative movement towards innovative, community-driven climate solutions. The biochar facility is expected to benefit thousands of farmers, enhance soil health, and contribute to Kisumu County’s broader climate adaptation and mitigation goals.

As TERA and its partners-including local stakeholders and climate champions-work to expand these efforts, Nyando Social Justice Center remains committed to advocating for inclusive, sustainable development that uplifts all members of our community.
