In the first week of December 2025; NSJC officials joined a special celebration of the opening of a new home for one of our youngest human rights defenders in Ayweyo Village, Nyando. This young defender was raised and supported at Mer Pamoja Children’s Home, one of our longstanding partners in child protection, and is a shining example of what care, solidarity, and consistent support can achieve.
The house opening celebration was a symbol of dignity, safety, and hope for a young person who has walked the journey from vulnerability to empowerment. Mer Pamoja Children’s Home played a central role in this transformation by providing shelter, education, and emotional support over the years.
For Nyando Social Justice Center, attending this event affirmed the value of strong partnerships in child protection. When community-based organizations, child protection homes, and local leaders work together, children are protected from harm and supported to build stable, independent futures.
Celebrating a Young Human Rights Defender
The occasion was especially meaningful because the beneficiary is an active young defender within our network. This young person has been involved in community awareness activities, speaking up on the rights and protection of children and adolescents in Nyando.
By standing with this young defender in Ayweyo, NCJS officials celebrated both personal resilience and the power of youth leadership. The new home marks a fresh chapter in which a formerly vulnerable child now has a safe space from which to continue advocating for others.
Strengthening Commitment to Child Protection
The event also highlighted why collaboration with Mer Pamoja Children’s Home and other child protection partners remains essential. Together, we aim to:
- Ensure that children in vulnerable situations grow up in safe, nurturing environments.
- Support young survivors and defenders to access opportunities for education, livelihood, and leadership.
- Build community structures that prevent abuse, neglect, and exploitation before they occur.
For Nyando Social Justice Center, witnessing this milestone in Ayweyo Village strengthens the resolve to continue defending the rights of children and young people across Nyando. A new house has been opened, and with it begins a chapter of dignity, safety, and sustained activism that NCJS is honored to accompany.
