Advocating for Mental Health Privacy and Services: Progress from Nyando Sub-County Mental Health Committee

Following the formation of the Nyando Sub-County Mental Health Committee on September 26th, Caren Wambui of Nyando Social Justice Center raised a critical issue regarding privacy at the pharmacy for patients receiving mental health care. This concern, previously reported through the iMonitor tool without resolution, highlights the ongoing need to protect confidentiality and dignity for those on treatment.

Caren committed to actively following up to secure a safe space and comprehensive mental health services at Ahero County Hospital. Recognizing the importance of coordinated action, she will be leading the committee’s efforts to engage with the ward administrator next week to advocate for these improvements.

In addition to these steps, Caren held a separate meeting with religious leaders in Katolo village, emphasizing the role of community support and reducing stigma around mental health.

These actions reflect the committee’s dedication to strengthening mental health care infrastructure and awareness in Nyando Sub-County, with support from TINADA Organization. Nyando Social Justice Center remains at the forefront of advocating for equitable, respectful, and accessible mental health services for all.
