Advancing Safety and Solidarity: Reflections from a Human Rights Defenders Session at Nyando Social Justice Center

On June 10, 2025, Nyando Social Justice Center had the honor of hosting and representing a diverse group of human rights defenders from across Kisumu County and beyond. This powerful session brought together participants from several affiliate centers, all united by a shared commitment to advancing justice, dignity, and safety in our communities.

Engaging with Global Expertise

We were especially privileged to engage with Fidelis Mudimu of the International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights in Kenya. Fidelis shared invaluable insights on holistic safety for defenders—covering physical, mental, digital, and sustainability-focused strategies. These conversations are both timely and essential, especially for grassroots defenders who often operate in complex and precarious environments.

Building a Culture of Safety and Resilience

The session offered a comprehensive overview of the practical tools and mindsets needed to protect ourselves and each other as we defend human rights. From digital security tips to strategies for mental well-being and long-term sustainability, the discussions reinforced the importance of cultivating resilience and informed resistance within our networks.

Nurturing Seeds of Solidarity

This gathering represents a significant step forward in nurturing the seeds of safety and solidarity planted by Front Line Defenders. We are inspired to continue growing this alliance of care, learning, and mutual support in the days, weeks, and years ahead. Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient movement—one that uplifts every defender and upholds the dignity and rights of all.

Gratitude and Commitment

We extend deep appreciation to Caren for opening this crucial space, and to our convenor for their leadership and presence. As we move forward, Nyando Social Justice Center remains committed to advancing the safety literacy movement through more informed local engagements, ongoing trainings, and shared spaces for growth.

Viva to resilience, growth, sustainability, and justice! Stay tuned for more updates and opportunities to join us in building a safer, more just future for all defenders and the communities we serve.
